PhD Studentship in Hydro Mechanics, London South Bank University

EPSRC Research Student
Hydro-Mechanical Properties Of Lime-Stabilised Shrinkable UK Clays
Faculty of Engineering, Science & the Built Environment

£45,696 over 3 years (tax free) + Standard UK/EU University Fees
Full-time, 3 Years - Start date: August-November 2007

Lime stabilisation is a technique of ground improvement which is applied to fine grained soils and can be used in a wide range of engineering applications. This technique can have significant economic advantages over other ground improvement techniques such as replacement of clay soils by imported granular fill.

Currently it is difficult for engineers to make quantitative predictions of how lime stabilisation will change the mechanical properties of the soil. The aim of this project is to obtain new experimental data and interpret the results in terms of a constitutive model of lime-treated UK clay soils either in saturated or unsaturated state. This will be achieved mainly through triaxial testing, including suction-controlled testing.

You will be an enthusiastic and highly committed individual, with a good degree in Civil Engineering (2:1 and above), an aptitude for experimental laboratory work and a good knowledge of soil mechanics. You will also possess good communication skills.

Knowledge of constitutive modelling for soils and a post-graduate degree in Geotechnics or Civil Engineering is an advantage.

You will be requested to register for a PhD degree at LSBU, where you will undertake an intensive programme of experimental laboratory work over the duration of the project. You will also be requested to present / publish your research results at conferences and academic
journals.

The tax-free stipend is £15,000 per year in 2007/2008, increasing at a rate of approximately 3% per year. In addition to the stipend, university fees will be paid to the level of standard UK/EU fees for all students. Overseas candidates are eligible for the studentship but overseas students’ fees will only be covered to the level of home fees. Therefore overseas applicants will need to cover the fees difference of £5,090 (in 2007/2008) from their stipend.
