PhD Scholarships in Bayesian Computer Modeling and Visualization of Virus Phylogegraphy [New Zealand]

Two PhD scholarships are available in the Computational Evolution Group at the University of Auckland under the supervision of Dr Alexei Drummond, co-founder of the BEAST software package for Bayesian evolutionary analysis.
The successful candidates will be involved in developing a Bayesian unification of geographical population dynamics and phylogenetics with a focus on human pathogenic viruses.

Current phylogenetic models provide inferences about genetic variation, however this research will focus on the roles of landscape, geography, dispersal and migration, in shaping (viral) genetic histories. The successful candidates will work on two novel classes of tractable phylogenetic models that explicitly include the spatial distribution of samples and the geographic features of surrounding habitats. While the primary focus of the research will be on viral pathogens, the proposed work will have the potential to establish a new foundation for phylogeographic modelling in general. Besides developing ethodology, the successful candidates will be involved in developing a new version of the BEAST software to include both phylogeographical modelling and visualization.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Marc Suchard?s research group in UCLA and the successful candidates will have the opportunity to spend up to one month each year in Los Angeles. The successful candidates will have a background in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science or evolutionary biology.

Students will be affiliated with either the Bioinformatics Institute or the Department of Computer Science depending on their background and preference.

Applications should be sent to Dr Alexei Drummond (alexei@cs.auckland.ac.nz) by 3rd March 2009, and include a CV, and the names of two referees.

Scholarships for Women in 2009: AARP Foundation

The AARP Foundation announced a call for entries to its third annual Women’s Scholarship Program.
The scholarships will provide funds to women 40 years and older who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must:

- Be female, and 40 years or older as of March 31, 2009
- Be able to demonstrate financial need
- Be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within 6 months of the scholarship award date

Priority consideration is given to women in three categories: women raising children of another family member, such as grandparents raising grandchildren, or those raising siblings or nieces/nephews; women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time; and women in dead end jobs, those with no opportunity for advancement, low pay and lacking either health or retirement benefits.

Scholarships may be used for any course of study at a public or private secondary school, including community colleges, technical schools and four-year universities. Funds are payable to the institution and may be used to pay for tuition, fees and books.

Interested applicants can submit their application online beginning February 3 at www.aarpfoundationwlc.org. The application process closes March 31, and scholarships will be awarded in the early summer.

Scholarship winners will be chosen by an independent selection committee established by the AARP Foundation. They will be cho-sen on the basis of financial need, personal circumstances and achievements, educational goals and the likely impact of the scholarship on their lives and their families and communities. The Foundation will award up to 100 scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $5,000, depending on financial need and the cost of the education or training program.

“The AARP Foundation is pleased to be offering the Women’s Scholarship Program again this year,” said Michigan State Director Steve Gools. “AARP Foundation is committed to elevating opportunities for women. Since its beginning, the program has provided valuable resources that enabled more nearly 350 deserving women to have access to the educational tools to advance their professional goals.”

While many individuals benefit from the work of the AARP Foundation, research shows that women are disproportionately at risk of having insufficient resources in the second half of their lives due to lower earning and different work patterns.

The AARP Foundation first announced the Women’s Scholarship Program in August of 2007 to help women 40 years and older overcome financial and employment barriers by allowing them to participate in education and training opportunities they could otherwise not afford.

The scholarship program is made possible by the AARP Foundation with support from the AARP Foundation Women’s Leadership Circle. Scholarships are available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources.

For more information about the AARP Foundation, please log on to www.aarp.org/foundation.

PhD Studentship and Research Opportunities in the Biology of Ageing, University of Liverpool [UK]

PhD Studentship and Research Opportunities in the Biology of Ageing, University of Liverpool, UK
We are accepting applications for a PhD studentship available for start in the autumn of 2009. The project focuses on the construction of mouse embryonic stem cell lines (mESC) exhibiting longevity biomarkers, in particular cellular resistance to oxidative stress and to sources of DNA damage thought to play a role in ageing and cancer. This project aims to: 1) employ cutting edge genomic techniques to identify new genes regulating susceptibility to stress in mESC; 2) construct stress resistant mESC lines to serve as models for studying stress response mechanisms that may modulate ageing and offer protection against age-related diseases. The exact directions of the project, however, will be adapted to fit the research interests of the student.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Dr de Magalhaes (aging[at]liv.ac.uk). Review of applications begins from mid-January 2009. To apply please visit this page.

Only EU/EEA citizens are eligible to apply and non-UK residents may only be eligible for a partial award.

Other Research Opportunities in the Biology of Ageing
We have other projects available for enthusiastic and ambitious self-funded students and postdocs. Projects can be experimental, computational, or a combination of both and are tailored to the interests of the individual. Prospective students and postdocs are welcome to contact us (aging[ at ]liv.ac.uk) to discuss possible common interests and we are happy to support applications for external fellowships.

Integrative Genomics of Ageing Group
The focus of our group is on the biology and genetics of ageing. Our research combines modern bioinformatics and experimental methods, in particular cell and molecular biology, to help decipher the human genome and provide new insights into the genetics of longevity, ageing and other complex traits. Our group is located in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Liverpool in the UK. We have active collaborations with research groups in Europe, Israel, and the USA. Although travelling is not essential, it is therefore possible for members of our group to acquire additional expertise in other labs. More information about our group and projects we are involved in are available online:
