At Risø DTU we are pursuing various implementations of laser Doppler-based techniques and are world leading in applying them to wind energy research. The PhD study will focus on performing atmospheric experiments with these systems, and/or investigating theoretically the fluid dynamic problems revealed by these measurements. As an example it can be investigated how the stagnating flow in front of a turbine or the wake behind it behaves, in order to understand spatial structure of turbulence around a wind ...

PhD Scholarship, Physical Geography or Environmental Engineering [Denmark]

A PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Environmental, Social and Spatial Change (ENSPAC), Modelling spatial catchment hydrology using Earth Observation and Distributed Temperature Sensing of streams The purpose of the PhD project is to use distributed temperature sensing (DTS) of streams to improve the spatial parameterization and modelling of catchment hydrological processes. PhD Scholarship in Plasticity, Technical University of Denmark

PhD – Scholarship in Plasticity Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section A 3-year Ph.D. scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section, from mid 2008. Reinforcement of polymers using carbon nano-tubes or nano-sized SiC particles can be applied to increase the stiffness. For composites, in which the reinforcing fibers are on very different size scales, very high strain gradients in the matrix material near the fibers can affect the overall properties significantly. Higher order continuum theories (strain gradient models) can be used to model the matrix material at the relevant small scale, accounting for effects of boundary layers of constrained plastic deformations around the hard reinforcing fibers. For the relatively low volume fractions used in nano reinforced materials it may prove useful to also add fibers on a larger scale. The effect of reinforcing materials with fibers on different length scales is the focus of...

Background: Utilization of biomass on large power plants is a potentially efficient method to reduce net CO2 emissions and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Use of biomass fuels in large suspension-fired boilers may cause operational problems. One example is when straw is applied as fuel in suspension fired boilers whereby severe ash deposit formation in the boiler chamber often takes place. Improved technologies for ash deposit removal are therefore needed...
