International Competition for Research Grants in Finite Element Modelling-Preliminary Announcement, Portugal

International competitions for doctoral and post-doctoral grants will be opened in the first semester of 2008. The grants are allocated to two research contracts supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal. The competitions are subject to the conditions publicly announced by the funding agency and by the host institution, Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon. This preliminary announcement is published with the purpose of assessing the profiles of potential candidates and of increasing the period of information, as the eventual candidates may use this opportunity to contact the project leaders and obtain additional information prior to the formal application period. Information on the research projects The basic information on the supporting research projects (on hybrid-Trefftz and hybrid-mixed finite element modelling) can be accessed using the following addresses: http://www.civil.ist.utl.pt/HybridTrefftz/ http://www.civil.ist.utl.pt/~luis/proje

PhD in International Studies, University of Trento, Italy

The University of Trento, is now inviting applications for its three-year doctoral programme in International Studies. The programme focuses on the study of International Law, International Economics and International Politics. It will be composed of at least 200 hours of structured coursework; a period of study outside Italy, and a dissertation, written under the supervision of faculty members and an external reader. All coursework will be in English and will be taught by members of the university’s multi-national faculty. Starting with the academic year 2008-2009 significant changes will be introduced to the programme of studies. Students interested in applying to the programme are advised to carefully read the annoucement of selection. An application package plus the full text of the announcement can be downloaded from the download box on the right-hand side of the page. APPLICATION DEADLINE: MONDAY MARCH 17, 2008 Please note that applications must arrive at the University by the de

PostDoc / PhD Position in Multiscale Methods for Molecular Dynamics, Germany

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is the first institute of the Max Planck Society dedicated to engineering sciences. Its objective is to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications. The newly founded Junior Research Group Population Dynamics aims at a fundamental understanding of disperse phase processes and distributed systems through predictive modelling. We offer a highly interdisciplinary research environment and excellently equipped facilities. Project: Molecular dynamics simulations of crystal growth For crystals with tailored properties the predictive understanding of crystal growth from solution is of major importance. Molecular dynamics have long time been considered infeasible for simulating crystal growth from the solution due to the associated computational effort. In the recent years scale-integration techniques have provided a possible way to overcome these limitations. In the present project scale inte

PhD Position for Candidates with a MSc in Mathematics, Physics or Related Fields, Norway

A three year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available within the project ”Reservoir characterization using ensemble Kalman filter”. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and several industry partners. The PhD education will be affiliated with the PhD programme at the University of Bergen and the research will be performed in close cooperation with the “Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research”, one of 21 Norwegian Centres of Excellence. The main objective of the project is to develop methodology for petroleum reservoir characterization. Possible research tasks include: * improve the uncertainty quantification provided by the ensemble Kalman filter * develop methodology for history matching in cases with complex geology * increase the understanding of the effect of model error. The research present challenges from various disciplines including mathematics, statistics, computer science and reservoir engineering. The successful applicant will s

MSc Scholarships in Mathematical Finance, University of Birmingham, UK

Fisher Scholarships: MSc in Mathematical Finance Department of Economics and School of Mathematics The University of Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance teaches technically trained graduates - including in Mathematics, Science and Engineering - to apply their quantitative skills to financial analysis. Successful completion of the MSc will qualify students to work in quantitative analysis in City of London. Recent advances in theoretical finance and computing power have moved quantitative analysis from the margins of the financial world to its core. Rigorous quantitative analysis is now involved in everything from the design and pricing of individual assets to the optimisation of whole portfolios. Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance gives highly motivated, high performing students an opportunity to work in this area. It is taught by two top ranked institutions - its School of Mathematics and its Department of Economics. Students take core courses in financial econometrics, mat

Postdoctoral Position in the Field of Geological Modeling at IRIS, Norway

International Research Institute of Stavanger AS (IRIS) was established on 17th. October 2005 by Rogaland Research (RF) and the University of Stavanger (UiS) as an independent research institute. The institute specialises in development and competence in the new knowledge community within the areas of petroleum, marine environment and social and industrial development. IRIS, which is customer oriented, is involved in several multinational projects, including EU programmes and has customers in a number of countries. The institute also has a significant role in influencing national knowledge and values, with close links to the Universities of Stavanger and Bergen, as well as Rogaland Science Park. IRIS commercialises its work through its own subsidiary IRIS - Forskningsinvest AS which has owner interests in approx. 25 companies. The Institute, together with its subsidiary and associated companies, forms a group with approx. 250 employees altogether, and is one of the largest research gro
