Germany: PhD Position in Architecture Design Group, The Institute for Integrated Signal Processing Systems (ISS), RWTH Aachen

The Institute for Integrated Signal Processing Systems of RWTH Aachen University has an immediate opening in the Architecture Design Group: Research Assistant – PhD Candidate. Our interest is in the analysis and synthesis of algorithms and architectures for future complex wireless communication systems. The focus of the architecture group is on new design methodologies for energy efficient, flexible circuits. Main research topics of this group are architectures for Application Specific Instruction-set Processors (ASIPs), in particular, with reconfigurable extensions, and their synthesis onto modern deep sub-micron technologies. Of special interest is the trade-off between flexibility in software (programmability) and hardware (FPGA-type structures). These investigations are performed in collaboration with the institute’s algorithm and tool groups as well as with the interdisciplinary research teams of the research cluster “Ultra high-speed Mobile Information and Communication (UMIC)”.

The Netherlands: PhD Position on Black Hole Jets at the API, Amsterdam

A PhD position is available starting this fall at the Astronomical Institute “Anton Pannekoek” in Amsterdam. Ideally the student would begin in September but anytime in the fall is possible. In any system where we see magnetized plasma accreting onto a central source, we also see astrophysical jets at least some of the time. The jets produced by accreting black holes and neutron stars are highly collimated, relativistic, and can dominate the entire output of the system. Yet despite decades of study we still do not understand the physics of jet formation or their basic internal characteristics. Besides being direct windows into the physics of strong gravity and extreme magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), jets also have an enormous impact on their environment which in the case of AGN can even effect the growth of the host galaxy. Luckily, since black holes come in stellar and supermassive versions spanning 8 orders of magnitude in mass, we can study different phenomena at either end of this larg

Germany: PhD Positions in Theoretical Computer Science / Algorithms Engineering, Technical University Munich

Technical University Munich (Germany): 2 PhD Positions in Theoretical Computer Science / Algorithms Engineering Modern computers have faster and faster CPUs, such that it is getting more and more difficult to supply them with the data bandwidth to leverage this speed. This works reasonably well if data is accessed linearly, and basically impossible if memory accesses are random. Hence, to help the design of fast algorithms, it is useful to consider the so called I/O-model, that captures the data transfer between different types of memory like cache and main memory. In this setting the project is concerned with the multiplication of a dense vector with a sparse matrix. This is not only an important building block of many applications, but also an abstract formulation of a data-flow problem. The focus is to understand the influence of the structure in the non-zero entries of the matrix on the I/O-complexity of the problem. The research group at the Computer Science Department at Technisc

Sweden: PhD Studentships in Applied Physics, Lulea University of Technology

2 PhD Candidate Positions Division of Machine Elements Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Closing date: 12-August-2007 1. JOB DESCRIPTION: One of the positions is within the project Dynamic behaviour of low viscosity fluid film bearings with compliant linings The second position is within the project Determination of dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings Journal bearings are used to transmit loads from rotating shafts to surrounding structures in most medium to large rotating machinery such as electric motors, generators, turbines, pumps etc and thus in many aspects define the dynamics of the machinery. The high demand for journal bearings is due to their long term performance, quietness of operation, exceptional damping properties, smaller outside diameter compared to rolling element bearings and low cost. Nowadays, many power plants operate in harsh conditions with regular stops and start-ups, a factor brought about by the deregulation of the

Ireland: PhD Studentship in Immunology at School of Pharmacy, University College Cork

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. Studentship, beginning in October 2007, to conduct research on T cell inducing vaccines to influenza virus. A highly efficacious cross-subtype influenza virus vaccine that induces T cell immunity to conserved influenza antigens could be used throughout the world to protect against current and newly arising strains including the avian H5N1 subtype that differs little from human influenza in its internal antigens. This project will develop and examine methods to induce long lasting T cell memory responses by immunization with vaccines based on virus vector platforms. The immunity and efficacy against infection induced by immunisation with these vaccines will be tested and correlates of immune protection will be elucidated. The research will be conducted in the Immunotherapy and Vaccine Research Laboratory lead by Dr. Anne Moore in the Dept. of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and based in the School of Pharmacy, UCC. The studentship is open to candidates

Belgium: PhD Studentship in Interdisciplinary Project on Good Governance in the EU, University of Antwerp

The department of Political Science, in collaboration with the faculty of Law, is looking for (m/f). a pre-doctoral researcher / Ph.D. student for an interdisciplinary project on Good Governance in the European Union. Job description: The candidate will prepare a Ph.D. dissertation on the topic of good governance in the European Union and more in particular on the development of a good governance model as a contribution to the political and legal legitimacy of the EU multi-level political system. Starting point is the White Paper on European Governance, once presented as an answer to the legitimacy crisis of the EU, but heavily criticized by both legal and political science scholars who consider good governance as a remedy for the legitimacy problems of the EU. The project aims explicitly at developing an interdisciplinary theoretical model of European good governance and at testing the existing European model against the theoretical ideal type. Profile: * Master in Political Scien
