UK: PhD Studentship in Mathematical Modelling and Artificial Intelligence, University of the West of England

This interdisciplinary PhD programme will be grounded in the fields of mathematical modelling and Artificial Intelligence. It is funded via the EPSRC’s Mathematical CASE programme, and has been designed to provide the research student with substantial modelling and algorithmic knowledge in the areas of mathematical programming, combinatorial optimisation, evolutionary algorithms, and statistical analysis. They will also gain valuable experience and skills from working in two large organisations with different cultures. In today’s “Knowledge Economy”, many organisations hold large amounts of data gathered from a variety of sources, some of which they wish to publish, sell, or otherwise exploit and disseminate, whilst respecting the privacy of individual sources. One such example is the UK’s Office of National Statistics (ONS), which often needs to protect the confidentiality of “sensitive” data in published tables, achieving this via a number of approaches collectively known as Statisti

The Netherlands: PhD Scholarship in Genetic Research On Asthma, The University of Groningen

PhD scholarship in the Netherlands Genetic research on asthmatic symptoms in young children Asthmatic symptoms (wheeze, shortness of breath) are common in the first years of life. Epidemiologic research has shown that in most cases these symptoms have disappeared at school age. At early age, the diagnosis of asthma is complicated since phenotypes with transient symptoms are difficult to differentiate from phenotypes with persistent symptoms, including atopic asthma. Genetic research may contribute to a better diagnosis and treatment of children with early asthmatic symptoms. The aim of the research is to investigate whether different genetic risk factors underlie different phenotypes of asthma at early age. Longitudinal data from three different Dutch birth cohorts are available to investigate the association between genes from multiple pathways and different phenotypes of asthma or level of lung function. Additional genes involved in lung development will be characterized and analyzed
