Australia: 2007 Google Australia Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Anita Borg (1949 - 2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology. As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce the 2007 Google Australia Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Through the scholarship, we would like to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and engagement within the technology community. A group of female B.Sc/B.Eng, M.Sc/M.Eng, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients, selected from the finalists, will each receive an AUS$...

Germany: PhD Position / Research Assistant in Large Scale Network, University of Bremen

PhD Position/Research assistant (half time) for 3 years is available in Zentrum fĂ¼r Technomathematik at the University of Bremen, Germany. The position is in the Project “Stability, robustness and approximation of Dynamic large-scale networks — Theory and applications in logistic networks” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Brief description of the project: The dynamics of complex, large-scale networks of interacting dynamical systems are hard to analyze and in many aspects methods and tools for the analysis are missing. In this project we will study such networks from the point of view of stability and approximation theory and investigate applications in logistics. To this end criteria for stability of nominal and perturbed networks will be developed. Furthermore, we will study the robustness of such networks with respect to perturbation of the dynamics in the vertices and of network structure. To obtain approximation techniques that retain structural properties of networks we propo...

Belgium: Research Assistant/PhD Studentship for Applied Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science, Ghent University

The research group Plant Systems Modeling of the Department Plant Systems Biology at the VIB in Ghent, Belgium, has an opening for a Research Assistant / Ph. D student (f/m) Computational modeling of auxin dynamics during lateral root initiation The department plant systems biology of the VIB has an opening for an ambitious and energetic research assistant in the new research group Plant Systems Modeling, that focuses on computational modeling of plant developmental biology. Systems biology is a relatively new approach in biology, that shifts focus from individual molecules, genes and cells to their dynamic interplay: how do molecules, genes and cells form a working mechanism, behaving in a predictable way? A crucial pilar in this approach at the interface of biology, physics and computer science, is computational modeling. Modeling the biological system in a computer simulation gives us insights into developmental mechanisms, and helps us identify the gaps in our understanding of the ...

Ireland: PhD Studentship in Trinity College Dublin on Groundwater Denitrification Potential in Irish Aquifers

Research studentship tenable at Trinity College Dublin in association with Teagasc Johnstown Castle (Wexford). Applications are invited for a research studentship on the above topic. Closing date for applications: Until filled. Project objectives: The leaching of nitrates in soils, combined with agricultural practice, is a potential threat to groundwater quality. This project proposes to quantify the movement and transformations of nitrate (NO3) from below the rooting zone to groundwater within agricultural systems. Denitrification is one of the main mechanisms for the reduction of NO3 movement through subsoils and groundwater, however this process may also lead to emissions of the greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O), rather than the environmentally benign di-nitrogen (N2). Internationally, subsurface denitrification has received only limited attention, due to methodological limitations that have more recently been overcome. Denitrification may prove to be the key process in determinin...
