PhD Scholarship in Solids Mechanics and Composite Materials, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada

The Mechanical Engineering Department of École Polytechnique de Montréal is recruiting one Ph.D. student in the field of Solids Mechanics and Composite Materials. The project title is: “In-situ mechanical properties identification for a composite material by the finite element updating method based on images obtained by X-ray microtomography”. X-ray microtomography can be used to generate 3D images of a material. It is possible with this technique to see inside a material and construct 3D representations of the microstructure without inducing damage. The Skyscan-1172 is a device that allows generating 3D microtomography images. In addition, this device can be equipped with a miniature compression machine that allows imaging some samples while being loaded. The team of professor Lévesque is currently working on the development of a methodology that would allow measuring the displacements inside the material based a digital volume correlation (DVC) algorithm. The objective of this projec

PhD Positions in Information Technology / Knowledge Management / E-Learning, The University of Jyväskylä, Findland

Ph.D. positions in Information Technology / Knowledge Management / E-Learning (Ph.D. level) Vacancies in the IT Research Institute (pre-information, informal inquiries) We are recruiting several researchers for two EU projects in the field of Open Content, Knowledge Management and / or E-Learning. The successful candidate has broad experiences in the fields of Knowledge Management, ELearning, Learning Object Repositories, E-Learning Standards and Evaluation with a focus on the Information Systems / Information Technology perspective. Candidates for the Ph.D. position have a strong motivation to achieve scientific competencies and work in the academic community. Strong communication, project management and communication skills are mandatory. The University of Jyväskylä is the second largest university in the Finland measured by the number of Master’s degrees conferred. The Faculty of Information Technology currently has 200 staff and nearly 2000 Master’s degree students and about 200 po

Postdoc and PhD Student Position in Genetics / Genomics / Bioinformatics, Germany

Postdoc and PhD Student Position in Genetics / Genomics / Bioinformatics, Germany Within a project for the “Marker assisted selection of Varroa-tolerant honey bees” there are two vacancies for scientific staff (payment is based on German pay scale for public employees, TV-L Ost E 13 and TV-L Ost E 13/2, respectively). The positions are available from the 1st of December 2008, the contract duration being 3 years. The availability of the positions is subject to the final approval of the project by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection,. In a first project phase, with the help of a microsatellite-based procedure, regions of the honey bee genome which are responsible for the detection and removal of Varroa-infested pupae from brood cells could be identified. Within the posted project a fine-mapping of the relevant genome regions and an isolation of possible candidate genes is to be carried out by applying SNP analysis. In addition, a concept concerning ge

MS and PhD Opportunities in Marine Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applicants for graduate study in Ph.D. and M.S. programs. Our Marine Sciences program has substantial federal, state and private funding support for cutting-edge research on topics including marine ecology, biogeochemical processes, marine microbiology, coastal and estuarine physical oceanography, river-ocean interactions, coastal geology, fluid dynamics and acoustics. These interdisciplinary, collaborative projects are increasing our understanding of the marine environment and are assessing impacts of human- and climatically-induced change in the coastal zone. Graduates of our program hold positions in a variety of settings, including at universities and research institutions (within the US and abroad), and in federal and state agencies. We are addressing a wide range of environmental processes and problems along the continuum spanning riverine, estuarine, coastal and open ocean environments a

PhD Studentships in High Voltage Laboratory, University of Southampton, UK

The School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton is a world class centre of research excellence. The School is the largest of its kind in the UK and it was awarded the top grade (5*) for its research in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science in the 2001 national assessment of research in UK universities. Three fully funded 3 year PhD studentships are available within the Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory for experimental-based research in the areas of either: dielectric materials, medium voltage cables or condition monitoring. For further information about the laboratory and its research please see http://www.highvoltage.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ Applicants should have (or expect to gain) a 1st or 2.1 class degree in a relevant discipline, for example electrical engineering, physics, materials science or polymer chemistry and must be eligible for an EPSRC Doctoral Training Award. Experience or interest in transmission and distribution plant wou

Graduate Research Assistantship in Biogeochemical and Hydrological Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems, Lehigh University, USA

Graduate Research Assistantship in Biogeochemical and Hydrological Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems, Lehigh University, USA Lehigh University seeks applications for an MS or PhD student in climate change and terrestrial ecosystem dynamics starting in Spring 2009 or Fall 2009. Student should be interested in studying how changes in climate, atmospheric chemistry, and land use affect terrestrial ecosystems. We will explore the effect of both historical changes and future scenarios of climate, CO_2 fertilization and plant physiology, ozone pollution, and land use and management on ecosystem productivity and the hydrological response. There is also the possibility to explore paleoclimatic issues of interest. The approach will involve computer modeling with climate and biogeochemical models. Candidate should have background in geologic or atmospheric sciences and skills in quantitative modeling and computer programming. Student will take a wide-range of courses in the Earth and Environment
