PhD Studentship in Evolution within the Discipline of Plant Evolution and Systematics

PhD studentship in Evolution within the discipline of Plant Evolution and Systematics With placement at the Department of Ecology, Section for Plant Ecology and Systematics, Faculty of Science, Lund University. Project title: Allelic variation and protein function in a plant community context This interdisciplinary project represents a collaboration between the Section of Plant Ecology and Systematics, and the Section of Microbial Ecology within the Department of Ecology, Lund University. The project will focus on genomic ecology and community genomics and will develop a novel system for the study of gene variation and function in the context of natural plant communities. Molecular differentiation will be investigated at a pair of loci coding for a key metabolic enzyme, phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI), in the wild plant Festuca ovina, and the distribution and function of individual PGI alleles will be explored in natural populations within grassland plant communities on the Baltic islan...

PhD Position on Isotopomer Studies of Plant-climate Interactions, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umea University, Sweden

PhD Position on Isotopomer Studies of Plant-climate Interactions, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umea University, Sweden Little is known on interactions between plants and atmospheric and climate change on time scales of centuries. The goal of the project is to deduce separate climate and physiological signals from tree rings, to be able to detect these interactions. We have developed an approach to measure isotopomer abundances (i.e. the intramolecular distributions of stable isotopes in metabolites), by NMR spectroscopy. Isotopomers turn isotope abundances into multiple information channels, as basis for parallel reconstruction of climate and physiological signals. The PhD project will focus on the deuterium isotope, applied to tree ring series and material from annual plants. The research environment includes chemists, earth scientists, and forest ecology. Qualifications: Applicants must have a master’s degree in chemistry, earth sciences or a related field. We s...

PhD Studentships in Biology, Karolinska Institutet [Sweden]

PhD Studentships in Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden A new National Graduate Dental Research School has been established at four Institutions in Sweden, funded by the Swedish Research Council, with approximately 2.5 MSEK per year for five years. Dental research will be supported within the Graduate School to create a network between the four Institutions, and research from medical and other faculties. A key aim is that graduate students will gain insight into both biomedical and clinical research, which will contribute to the establishment of a translational research environment. Within this framework 2 PhD studentships are available at the Center for Oral Biology, to investigate; Nerve-target interactions in teeth and bone. Neural growth factors and mineralization Project 1: Nerve growth factors and mineralization This project will test the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors, in addition to their roles in innervation, influence mineralization during dentinogenesis and osteog...

The project is supported by the EU and will be performed in context of a ...

Sweden: PhD Studentships in Applied Physics, Lulea University of Technology

2 PhD Candidate Positions Division of Machine Elements Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Closing date: 12-August-2007 1. JOB DESCRIPTION: One of the positions is within the project Dynamic behaviour of low viscosity fluid film bearings with compliant linings The second position is within the project Determination of dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings Journal bearings are used to transmit loads from rotating shafts to surrounding structures in most medium to large rotating machinery such as electric motors, generators, turbines, pumps etc and thus in many aspects define the dynamics of the machinery. The high demand for journal bearings is due to their long term performance, quietness of operation, exceptional damping properties, smaller outside diameter compared to rolling element bearings and low cost. Nowadays, many power plants operate in harsh conditions with regular stops and start-ups, a factor brought about by the deregulation of the...
