International Training Course in Energy Conservation Scholarships [Japan]

International Training Course on EFFECTIVE MEASURES FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION 24 August to 1 September 2009 Organized by the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship, Japan Implemented by AIT Extension Asian Institute of Technology, and EBARA Hatakeyama Memorial Fund Rationale: Energies in various forms are indispensable for sustaining human life and pursuing development. Consumption of energy resources worldwide has increased conspicuously in the past decades along with economic growth and population increase, for which exhaustible fossil fuel resources are occupying majority of consumption. Such mass consumption has resulted in serious environmental impacts represented by emission of greenhouse gases. Energy efficiency is the cheapest, fastest and smartest strategy available for saving money and resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world. To provide energy security and to preserve the environment for future generations, it is essential to be knowledgeable

Postdoctoral Position in Protein / Antibody Engineering for the Therapy of Autoimmunity (85), University of Texas Southwestern [USA]

Protein/Antibody Engineering for the Therapy of Autoimmunity (85) Postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Prof. E. Sally Ward at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Projects will include the use of state-of-the-art approaches to generate novel antibody-based therapeutics for autoimmunity and cancer. The work will involve the engineering of antibody-Fc receptor interactions and the use of new transgenic mouse models. These studies are of considerable relevance to the rapidly expanding use of antibodies as diagnostics and therapeutics in the biopharma industry. The projects are supported by institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the biopharma industry. In collaboration with Prof. R.J. Ober, the laboratory provides a unique inter- and multi-disciplinary environment. Students have the opportunity to work on challenging technological problems in the framework of a laboratory that is devoted to the study

PhD Studentship in Uncertainty Quantification Project, the Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh [UK]

PhD Studentship in Uncertainty Quantification project Subject: PhD Studentship at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Geological realism in reservoir models: uncertain data integration A PhD studentship is available in the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, to work on an industry funded Uncertainty Quantification project. Improvement of geological realism in reservoir models is one of the ultimate goals in assessing uncertainty of production predictions. One of the ways to characterize realistic geology is to describe model components and relations in a form of prior distributions, which are based on relevant geological knowledge and data. For instance, a relation between curvature and widths for fluvial channels is supported by observation of contemporary river systems. The PhD work will be focused on integration of geo-data from different fields – geology, hydrology, paleo-geology, geography – into sub-surface rese

PhD Scholarship in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing, FEMTO-ST, Besançon [France]

Applications are invited for a three year PhD scholarship in the FEMTO-ST Institute (see www.femto-st.fr) at Besançon FRANCE. This PhD project will form part of a wider project which aims to develop new mathematical tools and a general software dedicated to Arrays of Microsystems. Arrays of Microsystems have been developed and continue their expansion in a number of scientific and technical fields. The research of the project will focus on deriving general multi-scale multi-physical models able to cover large classes of such systems. The multi-scale mathematical methods will be rooted in recently developed techniques by our group or collaborators. Part of mathematical modeling will be done in collaboration with a Laboratory of Mathematics. The scholarship is valued at about €1.000 net per month for three years. It will be available from 1 October 2009. Application to a room on the campus is possible for low rate. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a
