The Netherlands: PhD Position on Extrasolar Planets at Leiden Observatory

A PhD position is available at Leiden Observatory for a research project on transiting extrasolar planets. Since about a decade, a genuine revolution is unfolding in exoplanet research. Although direct detection is still extremely difficult, radial velocity techniques have been very successful in finding planetary systems, with more than 200 planets discovered to date. While these give great insights in orbital statistics, not much is being learned about the individual planets themselves. This situation is very different in the rare case that exoplanets transit their host star, revealing the planets’ sizes, masses and densities, and allowing studies of their atmospheres in the optical and near-infrared. The PhD student will work on the forefront of extrasolar planet research, focusing on the detection and investigation of transiting planets, in particular studying their atmospheres and direct thermal emission using new innovative methods, and finding new transiting planets in current a

Germany: PhD Position / Research Assistant in Large Scale Network, University of Bremen

PhD Position/Research assistant (half time) for 3 years is available in Zentrum für Technomathematik at the University of Bremen, Germany. The position is in the Project “Stability, robustness and approximation of Dynamic large-scale networks — Theory and applications in logistic networks” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Brief description of the project: The dynamics of complex, large-scale networks of interacting dynamical systems are hard to analyze and in many aspects methods and tools for the analysis are missing. In this project we will study such networks from the point of view of stability and approximation theory and investigate applications in logistics. To this end criteria for stability of nominal and perturbed networks will be developed. Furthermore, we will study the robustness of such networks with respect to perturbation of the dynamics in the vertices and of network structure. To obtain approximation techniques that retain structural properties of networks we propo

The Netherlands: PhD Studentship in Astronomy, the Kapteyn Institute in Groningen

There is a studentship available to carry out a PhD at the Kapteyn Institute, University of Groningen, to do observational research on black holes (BH). The goal of the PhD project is to obtain robust measurements of BH spins, both for stellar-mass BHs in our Galaxy, and super-massive BHs at the center of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The PhD student will be supervised by Mariano Mendez. Rationale: BHs are characterized by three quantities: Mass, spin, and charge. Only mass and spin are astrophysically interesting. This project focuses on the problem of measuring the BH spin. Spins are important for 3 reasons: (i) They are a direct consequence of the BH formation mechanism. (ii) The innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) is 6 times closer to the BH, and hence effects of General Relativity are more extreme, in maximally spinning BHs than in non-rotating ones. (iii) The binding energy at the ISCO is 7 times larger for a maximally spinning BH than for a non-spinning one; current ideas abo
