PhD Grant in Wavelet Analysis of Strong Motion Seismograms, the University of Potsdam, Germany

The newly founded Graduate School at the University of Potsdam (Germany) entitled “Natural Disasters: Generation, Propagation, and Impacts” invites applications for a PhD position: Wavelet based information extraction from strong motion seismograms Supervisors: M. Holschneider (hols@math.uni-potsdam.de), G. Zoeller (gert.zoeller@uni-potsdam.de), F. Scherbaum (fs@geo.uni-potsdam.de) In low seismicity regions, e.g. in Western central Europe, the ground motion of future earthquakes is commonly estimated from regression models, which have been generated from response spectra of ground motion recorded in seismically active areas. In contrast to the Fourier spectrum, the description of a response spectrum within a simple model is not straightforward. However, for applications in engineering seismology, the Fourier spectrum has the shortcoming that it does not provide time localization. This projects aims at the design of a methodology to combine the advantages of Fourier spectra (physical

PhD Position in Sensorless Transition-delay in Boundary Layers, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)

The reduction of the viscous drag force exerted on thin bodies (e.g. wings and blades) moving in a fluid is of great technical interest (for example for drag reduction of airplanes or optimization of gasturbines). One of the mayor keys to drag-reduction is the delay of transition to turbulence in the boundary layer. Due to the local nature of transition and the rapid nature of breakdown a sensorless (open-loop) strategy is highly preferable, since it prevents the necessity of large numbers of fast sensor/actuator combinations. Thus far, the success of the delay-techniques on boundary layer flows with noise is limited and for bypass-transition none of the strategies has been successful. In this PhD-project a detailed experimental and numerical study of the mechanisms to delay the transition in a boundary layer will be performed on three modal-based options: * Upstream traveling waves (UPTW) * Spanwise traveling waves (SPTW) * Delay by streaks (DBS) The combination of experim

Postgraduate PhD Position in Distributed Cooperative Control of Large-Scale Networked Embedded Systems, Cork Institute of Technology

A successful candidate will be registered for a PhD degree by research and paid a grant of €16,000 per annum for up to 36 months. Control of large engineering systems, consisting of networks of interconnected/interacting subsystems, has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to the increasing availability of cheap computer and sensing power. Despite this progress, most control strategies rely on distributing control authority among individual system units without explicitly accounting for interactions between the subsystems. Such a completely decentralised strategy may result in unacceptable control performance, especially if the subsystems interact strongly. On the other hand, completely centralised control of large, networked systems might be regarded as impractical and unrealistic. Two vital alternatives to this problem are the communication-based and cooperative control strategies. The former utilises a decentralised strategy but allows for information (about controll
