PhD Position at the University of Berne, Switzerland

One PhD student position will be available November 2007 (or as agreed) for at least three years. The project is financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and focuses on the role of Eph receptors on angiogenesis. Eph receptors and their ligands (ephrins) play a key role in angiogenesis, axonal guidance and cellular targeting. For the past 8 years, our laboratory has been investigating the role of this receptor/ligand family in inflammatory and tumorigenous processes. Various molecular genetic, cell biological (among others, various in vitro angiogenesis assays) and biochemical methods are used to characterize the biological functions and signaling pathways downstream of these proteins. Furthermore, we have set up various in vivo models for hypoxia (mouse skin flap assay, rat segmental renal infarction) and inflammation (rat anti Thy1.1. nephritis) to assess the response of this receptor/ligand family to different noxes. Requested background: We seek a highly motivated candidat

PhD Studentship in Economics, Cerna, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des mines de Paris, France

Cerna, the Center of Industrial Economics of the Ecole des mines de Paris, offers a PhD position to work on patents and standards in mobile telecommunications. The number of cooperative technology standards ensuring compatibility between competing products has increased enormously in the past 20 years, especially in Information and Communication industries (DVD, MPEG, GSM, UMTS…). Innovators have an obvious interest in their patents being chosen by standards developers, since widespread adoption of their patents means that they will receive royalties from a large number of license holders. On the one hand, cooperative R&D can be largely undertaken for many complementary technologies must be put together to create a standard that is useful. On the other hand, competition between technology firms in standard-setting bodies can be fierce as each firm seeks to prove the superiority of its innovation and thus influence the choice of standard of its own patent portfolio. Alongside this a

Postdoctoral Position in Medical Imaging Post-processing, LE2I / Université de Bourgogne, France

Post-doc subject: Prediction of rupture risk in abdominal aortic aneurysm from MR images without contrast agent. Surgical intervention for abdominal aortic aneurysm is appropriate when the cumulative risk for rupture exceeds risk for repair. Currently, the recommendation for intervention is generally based on aortic diameter. However, large clinical trials have shown that this parameter is not always reliable. In an ongoing project at the Université de Bourgogne, associated with the University Hospital of Dijon, an evaluation of aortic wall stress (in the case of abdominal aortic aneurysm) is performed from morphological and functional parameters acquired via MRI. The use of cine-MR sequences without injection of contrast agent allows a deformable 3D representation of the aorta. Other sequences allow the evaluation of specific morphological or functional (such as blood velocity) parameters. The stress distribution along the aorta may be calculated from these parameters, in order to pr
