The multi-scale mathematical methods will be rooted in recently developed techniques by our group or collaborators. Part of mathematical modeling will be done in collaboration with a Laboratory of Mathematics. The scholarship is valued at about €1.000 net per month for three years. It will be available from 1 October 2009. Application to a room on the campus is possible for low rate. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a ...

Postdoc Position, Models and Semantics for Product-centric Systems Interoperability, Université Henri Poincaré – Nancy I [France]

POST-DOC Position available in Nancy (France) Period: October 2009 – September 2010 Research Director: Prof. Hervé Panetto (Herve.Panetto[ at ]cran.uhp-nancy.fr) Title: Models and Semantics for product-centric systems interoperability The objective of this work is to test the scientific interest of making the product, beyond the whole process, interactive (this means that the product information may participate to the decision process), to organize then a more collaborative interoperability of different heterogeneous systems (APS, ERP, MES, SCM). Companies are interested as much in the design of systems (production, information, decision-making …), and their interoperations even their integration in a given context. This problem only makes sense in the context of evolution of organizations and their environment, or when a company provides engineering methods and tools that facilitate the decision making of complex processes. Given this context, an approach for the engineering of thes...

Postdoctoral Positions in Marine Microbiology, Roscoff [France]

Postdoctoral applicant Station Biologique, Roscoff, France Ecological significance of photoheterotrophic bacteria in the Western Arctic Ocean We are looking for a foreign applicant for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Station Biologique (Roscoff, France). We currently witness in the Arctic: 1) a decrease in summer ice cover that exposes sea surface to solar radiation and physical forcings, 2) permafrost thawing and increased river runoff, both leading to an increase in the export to the ocean of organic carbon previously sequestered in the Tundra, and 3) an increase in ultraviolet radiation. These three phenomena favour a growing mineralization of organic carbon through photo-oxidation and bacterial activity, amplifying the increase in atmospheric CO2. At the same time, the exposure of a larger fraction of ocean surface to sun light and the increase in nutrients brought by rivers lead to larger autotrophic production and sequestration of organic carbon. To predict the balance of thes...

PhD Scholarships in Innovation and Market Selection, France

PhD Scholarship Innovation and Market Selection: an Evolutionary Approach CNRS-GREDEG, University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis, and Department for Research on Innovation and Competition (OFCE) - SciencesPo (France) Description of the Subject: Aggregate productivity growth is the outcome of incumbent firms adopting new and superior techniques and (or) entering firms replacing exiting firms with better technologies. This research project will concern market selection mechanisms by characterising innovation as a process of selection (or acquisition) of more productive technologies within firms and a process of selection of firms itself. It will analyse both what happens inside the firms and what happens between firms on the market when firms are engaged in innovative or imitative processes. The first part of the research will be devoted to making a survey of empirical and theoretical analyses of industrial dynamics, which should focus on the relation between innovation and competition. The ...

PhD Positions in Color Content-Aware Image Processing, France

Image retrieval consists in finding among a database of target images those which represent the same scene as this represented by a query image. In this context, the key-point is the extraction of efficient descriptors from the images. Several recent studies have shown that color histograms can be very efficient in this context. However, color histograms do not take into account the spatial arrangement of colors and are very sensitive to illumination changes. Several authors have shown that the spatial organization of colors could significantly improve the performance of the image classifiers. Some spatial descriptors, such as color correlograms, may be used to represent in a global way the spatial arrangement of colors in the image, but they are sensitive to object occlusion and scale variation and are not designed to recognize objects in cluttered scenes. In very recent works, few searchers propose to extract local descriptors such as SIFT or SURF which have been proven to be more ro...

2008 Eiffel Scholarship Programme for Master and PhD, France

Eiffel excellence scholarships are awarded to high-achieving overseas students to whom French centres of higher education would like to offer a place on a Master’s or PhD course. The courses taken by these students in France ultimately target positions of responsibility in the public or private sector, rather than careers in teaching or research. The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs gives priority to candidates from emerging countries (starting with Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and new members of the European Union), though the PhD scholarships also address students from industrialized countries. Applications from students currently studying outside France will be given priority over those from students already studying in France. Areas of study covered by the Eiffel programme Eiffel grants cover the following subject areas: * Engineering sciences for the Master’s course, and sciences in a broader sense for the PhD course (engineering sciences...

Postdoc Position in Medical Imaging Post-Processing, Université de Bourgogne, France

Post-doc subject: Prediction of rupture risk in abdominal aortic aneurysm from MR images without contrast agent. Surgical intervention for abdominal aortic aneurysm is appropriate when the cumulative risk for rupture exceeds risk for repair. Currently, the recommendation for intervention is generally based on aortic diameter. However, large clinical trials have shown that this parameter is not always reliable. In an ongoing project at the Université de Bourgogne, associated with the University Hospital of Dijon, an evaluation of aortic wall stress (in the case of abdominal aortic aneurysm) is performed from morphological and functional parameters acquired via MRI. The use of cine-MR sequences without injection of contrast agent allows a deformable 3D representation of the aorta. Other sequences allow the evaluation of specific morphological or functional (such as blood velocity) parameters. The stress distribution along the aorta may be calculated from these parameters, in order to pre...

PhD Studentship in Economics, Cerna, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des mines de Paris, France

Cerna, the Center of Industrial Economics of the Ecole des mines de Paris, offers a PhD position to work on patents and standards in mobile telecommunications. The number of cooperative technology standards ensuring compatibility between competing products has increased enormously in the past 20 years, especially in Information and Communication industries (DVD, MPEG, GSM, UMTS…). Innovators have an obvious interest in their patents being chosen by standards developers, since widespread adoption of their patents means that they will receive royalties from a large number of license holders. On the one hand, cooperative R&D can be largely undertaken for many complementary technologies must be put together to create a standard that is useful. On the other hand, competition between technology firms in standard-setting bodies can be fierce as each firm seeks to prove the superiority of its innovation and thus influence the choice of standard of its own patent portfolio. Alongside this a...
