PhD Scholarship in Country Capabilities and the International Competitiveness of Firms, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

The Department of Industrial Economics and Strategy invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the following research area: Country capabilities and the international competitiveness of firms. Why do some regions and countries obtain international leadership in certain industries? This question is at the heart of the important debate on the resource and capability endowments of nations and the international competitive advantage of firms and calls for further research. The Danish maritime industry – which includes shipping, shipbuilding and repair, maritime equipment manufacture, maritime services and offshore oil and gas extraction – offers a welcome opportunity to study this and related questions. Denmark is the leading European seafaring nation (and on world Top10) and Danish maritime companies are among the most innovative and successful in the world. The project will be embedded in a pioneering research unit at CBS called “Blue Denmark.dk – Research on the Maritime I

Postdoc - Interdisciplinary Study of Phototropism in Arabidopsis, University of Lausanne, Switzerland

The laboratories of Christian Fankhauser (Center for Integrative Genomics) and Marc Robinson-Rechavi (Department of Ecology and Evolution and Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) seek a highly motivated and self-directed postdoctoral fellow to study phototropism in Arabidopsis thaliana using a combination of experimental biology and bioinformatics. The group of Christian Fankhauser is studying signal transduction during phototropism (see PNAS 2006, vol. 103: 10134-10139; Plant J. 2004 40: 826-834). Recent studies have demonstrated that genome duplication events have lead to the acquisition of pairs of genes that are typically involved in signal transduction where the paralogs have acquired novel functions. The selected candidate is expected to study this possibility using bioinformatics tools that are developed or routinely used in the lab of Marc Robinson-Rechavi. Genes selected from this in silico approach will then be functionally characterized in the lab of Christian Fankhauser. Tech

PhD Scholarship in Modelling and Control of Semi-Active Dampers, Technical University of Denmark

PhD Scholarships in Modelling and Control of Semi-Active Dampers 1 PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering from January 1st 2007. Apply before: 17.09.2007 at 12:00 (noon) 1 PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering from January 1st 2007. Damping plays an increasing role for satisfactory performance of large scale structures under the action of environmental loads like wind, waves and earthquakes. The variable nature of the loads leads to need for dampers that can adjust their reaction following changes in load and response of the structure. In civil engineering structures interest has focused on semi-active dampers such as the Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper. Semi-active dampers are devices where one or several of the mechanical properties can be adjusted in real time by an appropriate control algorithm. Semi- active dampers have the potential to significantly increase the damping efficiency compared to traditional passive

Postdoctoral Position - Genetics, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa

Various postdoctoral research positions in molecular genetics are available in the Aquaculture Division, Department of Genetics, Stellenbosch University with the project title Genetic improvement of the abalone, Haliotis midae." Haliotis midae, known locally as perlemoen, occurs along the Western, Southern and Eastern shores of South Africa and is the only one of the six species that occurs in South Africa that is commercially exploited. H. midae displays a very slow growth rate, taking two to five years to reach market size. This is an obstacle in the profitable farming and global competitiveness of this species. In order to increase the productivity and the profitability of the commercial activity, a research program has been designed that makes use of the modern technology currently applied to other aquaculture species. The research program consists of three main tears: a) establishment of breeding programs with the assistance of genetic markers, b) generation of linkage maps a

Please quote Ref: B7348AC The North West Public Health Observatory within the Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University invites applications are invited for an MPhil/PhD studentship to conduct a programme of research concerning relative and absolute inequalities in health. It is well recognised that inequalities in wealth lead to inequalities in health. At a population level, many health indicators show a strong relationship with deprivation. In western societies it is not absolute poverty but an individual’s perceived or actual rank in society that is linked to health. However, while research has been carried out at individual level using small-scale surveys, little has been done to utilise the enormity of geograp

PhD Position in Computational Science in Imaging, Technical University of Denmark

PhD position - Computational Science in Imaging Development and implementation of large-scale algorithms for imaging problems in, e.g., biometrics and geophysics. Apply before: 01.10.2007 at 12:00 (noon) We develop and implement the enabling mathematical technology for next-generation imaging problems arising in important areas such as biometrics, crystallography, geophysics, and surveillance. In these and other similarly challenging problems of today, mathematics technology goes hand in hand with hardware and software technology. We will revisit the original problem formulations and derive novel and highly-efficient methods for their solution, using the most recent developments in mathematics and numerical analysis. This will enable us to compute significantly more accurate solutions than the ones currently available, at a dramatically reduced cost. The PhD project The PhD project aims specifically at developing modern and efficient algorithms for imaging using recent advances in inte
