12 PhD Studentships / 3 Postdoctoral Fellowships in Berlin, Germany

The Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) 1458 “Notational Iconicity. On the Materiality, Perceptibilty and Operativity of Writing” at Freie Universitaet Berlin, funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), is offering from 1st October 2008 12 Ph.D studentships (full-time) and 3 postdoctoral fellowships for a duration of 2 years (the Ph.D studentships are extendable for another year). Closing date for applications: 26th April 2008. The research training group is dedicated to investigating script/writing as a key subject in the humanities. Its aim is to contribute to a change of perspective from a phonographic, language-centred concept of writing to an iconographic, language-neutral concept of writing. The founding hypothesis is that both alphabetic and non-alphabetic scripts are hybrid forms that combine discursive and iconic components and that writing is therefore more than simply a medium used to record spoken language. The research training group investigates systematica

Postdoc in Computational Physics, University of California, Berkeley, USA

A postdoc position in the field of first-principles computer simulations of materials at high pressure is available in the group of Prof. Burkhard Militzer at UC Berkeley. The work focuses on the application of condensed matter simulation techniques to planetary science problems in order to improve our understanding of the interior of planets. Physicists with a background in computational methods are encouraged to apply. The project has two parts. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations are applied to minerals in the deep Earth and density functional based methods are used to study fluids at high pressure including hydrogen-helium mixtures in giant planets. The position will be hosted at the Department of Earth and Planetary Science but the project proceeds in collaboration with physics and astronomy. Application Candidates should have experience in first-principles methods and send their applications by email to militzer@berkeley.edu using PDF format and postdoc search in the subject line. Al

Postdoc - Hop Transformation and Metabolic Engineering of Plant Glandular Trichomes, University of Northern Iowa, USA

The University of Northern Iowa is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Axel Schwekendiek to work in plant metabolic engineering of hops. Hops are used in the brewing industry for flavoring beer and in nutriceutical, biofuel process, and animal feeds as anticancer, phytoestrogen, and antimicrobial agents. The successful candidate will oversee transformation projects at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA, USA and transfer technology to an industrial setting. The candidate should be able to work in Iowa and in Washington, or abroad at hosting-academic institutions, according to project needs. The postdoc will lead several technicians, students and a doctoral student at both institutions in new facilities dedicated to hop tissue culture and interact with successful genomics and gene isolation efforts (see The Plant Cell, 20:186-200, 2008; J. Agric. Food Chem., 55: 7002-7009, 2007). Experience in plant tissue culture and genetic transformation is required. T

PhD Studentship in Computational Genomics, King's College London, UK

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in Computational Genomics and Systems Biology at the Centre for Bioinformatics, Kings College London. The aim of the project will be the large-scale analysis of cellular gene networks and their interactions in order to link the structural and functional network properties and further our understanding of the rules governing species evolution and molecular interactions. Previous work involved the development of mathematical procedures for module discovery and data mining of microbial interaction networks. The work under this PhD studentship is expected to enhance these approaches through the use of appropriate database technologies, mathematical and statistical modelling as well as relevant computational biology software. The Kings College London Centre for Bioinformatics (KCBI) was established in September 2007 through a collaboration between the Schools of Physical Sciences & Engineering and Biomedical & Health Sciences.
