PhD scholarship in the Netherlands
Genetic research on asthmatic symptoms in young children
Asthmatic symptoms (wheeze, shortness of breath) are common in the first years of life. Epidemiologic research has shown that in most cases these symptoms have disappeared at school age.
At early age, the diagnosis of asthma is complicated since phenotypes with transient symptoms are difficult to differentiate from phenotypes with persistent symptoms, including atopic asthma. Genetic research may contribute to a better diagnosis and treatment of children with early asthmatic symptoms. The aim of the research is to investigate whether different genetic risk factors underlie different phenotypes of asthma at early age. Longitudinal data from three different Dutch birth cohorts are available to investigate the association between genes from multiple pathways and different phenotypes of asthma or level of lung function. Additional genes involved in lung development will be characterized and analyzed. The research may be expanded to study the function of genes in a well-equipped laboratory setting.
Requirements:
University graduate. For this position we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a master in medical sciences, biology, or other relevant scientific disciplines. The candidate should have a strong interest in genetic epidemiology. Good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing.
Organization:
The Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD (GRIAC) (http://www.rug.nl/guide/research/asthmacopd/index) is of the Graduate School for Drug Exploration (GUIDE) of the University of Groningen (RuG) GUIDE provides both graduate and MD/PhD students with a stimulating research environment and with a broad spectrum of courses that will prepare them technically and functionally for a successful research career in an academic or industrial setting. (http://www.graduateschoolguide.nl/)
Scholarship:
This will be a full-time scholarship at the department of Epidemiology (1.0 FTE, 36 hours per week) initially for a period of one year. Subject to satisfactory performance, this may be extended up to four years. More information about the Ubbo Emmius Scholarship can be found on this link.
