The Surface Mechanics and Tribology research group is one of the most active in the School of Engineering and Design, well established nationally and internationally for research in the fields of surface engineering, wear, gears and thin film lubrication.

The research project is sponsored by SKF, leading global supplier of products, solutions and services in the area comprising rolling element bearings, seals, mechatronics, services and lubrication systems.
The thematic of the research involves the development and testing of an advanced method of measuring the thickness of very thin lubricating films characteristic to rolling element bearings, gears, or cams. The final objective is to test the technical limits of the capacitive method of measuring film thickness in mixed and boundary regimes of lubrication.
The funding is available for three years and cover the cost of equipment, student fees, and a student stipend of £13,300 per annum. According to results, this stipend can increase in the second and third year. The candidates should have a good degree in mechanical or materials engineering, mechatronics or other related disciplines, show interest in research and enthusiastic in carrying out experimental work. The position is available to UK or European Union candidates.
