The Department of Accounting, Finance and Management, at the University of Essex, is inviting applications for at least seven PhD scholarships, commencing in October 2007, in any area of accounting, finance or management.
The scholarships will pay PhD fees plus £5,000 per annum and are available to both overseas and Home/EU candidates. The scholarships will be for full-time study and renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress, for a period of up to three years.
Candidates will be expected to be available for an interview at the University of Essex on 25-26 June 2007.
The Department of Accounting, Finance and Management currently has 51 members of staff and 54 PhD students. It is a highly ranked research driven organisation with three strong groups.
The Accounting Group is notable for the breadth and diversity of its research interests. Particular strengths lie in the areas of governance and accountability, business ethics, auditing, accounting and business history, corporate social responsibility, management accounting, and critical accounting, including critical perspectives on globalisation, privatisation and public sector reforms.
The Finance Group has research interests in all areas of finance, both applied and theoretical. It has particular strengths in banking (including credit risk), behavioural finance, corporate finance
(including M&As), empirical finance (including financial econometrics), international finance, option pricing and the theory of finance.
The Management Group pursues a very inter-disciplinary research agenda. Particular strengths lie in the areas of: critical management studies, art, aesthetics and philosophy of organisation and management, language and narrative analysis, and critical perspective of globalisation, international management and technology.
Members of all research groups have many publications in leading international journals. They have organised a range of international conferences in their areas of research. A number of high-profile journals are edited by staff in the Department, which contributes to a vibrant research culture.
