A PhD position is available in the Department of Optometry and Visual Science under the supervision of Dr. Joshua A. Solomon.
Project Title: Image statistics in the visual system.
The application deadline is July 20.
The project should start around September 1.
The broad goal of the project is to discover and describe the mechanisms used by the visual system for statistical descriptions of image features. Candidates should have a strong interest in vision. Experience in psychophysics is desirable. Some programming experience (e.g., Matlab,
Mathematica, C) would be beneficial.
Collaborators include Professor Michael J. Morgan and Professor Charles F. Chubb. The successful candidate will join the Visual Psychophysics and Perception Group within a friendly environment. Other members of the group include Dean Melmouth, Marc Tibber, Isabelle Mareschal and Professor Manfred Fahle. Other current projects within the group include a BBSRC funded investigation of the contextual influences on orientation perception (psychophysics and computational modelling) and a Wellcome Trust funded investigation of the sensory-motor mechanisms involved in perceptual extrapolation (psychophysics and fMRI).
The studentship is open to UK applicants with a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours Degree (or Masters degree in an appropriate discipline), and EU applicants with an equivalent level of academic qualification. The position will be supported for 3 years, including an annual stipend of £14,300, as well as tuition fees for a home/EU student. Non-EU applicants are eligible to apply, but will need to self-fund the difference between EU and International Student Fees.
To apply, please send by email or post a CV, at least 2 academic references, and a cover letter stating how your interests and experience relate to the project. For non-native English speakers, please also include a copy of your English qualifications if possible.
Feel free to contact J.A.Solomon@city.ac.uk for informal enquiries.
