Italy: PhD Studentships in Foundations Of the Life Sciences And Their Ethical Consequences, University of Milan
This PhD course aims at realizing an international class of highly skilled scholars, having both scientific and philosophical competences.
It is open to students having either a scientific or a philosophical career. Candidates with a philosophical career are requested to demonstrate basic competence in molecular biology.

Starting date: 1st January of each year
The PhD program provides the opportunity for:
* a strong training in molecular biomedicine in the light of the evolutionary theory;
* a strong logical-philosophical training;
* a strong connection between scientific and humanistic subjects;
* a strong link between theoretical and empirical preparation;
* a close contact with the international community working on the foundations of the life sciences, bioethics, and molecular biomedicine.
Research topics:
* philosophical foundations of biology and medicine;
* ethical analyses of the consequences of the biomedical results;
* biomedicine and society.
Fellowship:
For the entire duration of the PhD course, the students will be supported either by SEMM fellowships or outside grants. The total amount of the fellowship is 18.500. From the indicated amount will be detracted social and pension contributions as well as Italian taxes. The detractions are variable and approximately estimated around 25% of the total amount. Any tuition fee is covered by SEMM.
Eligibility
Young and motivated university graduates are encouraged to apply. There are no restrictions on nationalities for admission to the PhD program. Foreign applicants must hold an academic degree, which qualifies them to start a PhD course in their home country. Candidates expecting to receive their university degree can also apply, provided that they receive it before November 2007.
Applicants are expected to be motivated, young graduates holding a scientific or philosofical academic degree which qualifies to start a PhD course in their home country.
