PhD Studentship Sustainable in Technologies and Poverty Alleviation in Developing Countries School of Earth and Environment
Closing date: 24 July 2007
Required for a period of 3 years commencing around October, 2007 (the starting date is negotiable).
Salary: Covers tuition fees, plus a maintenance grant of £12,500 per year.

We have a particular interest in attracting candidates who would like to work in India. Domestic and overseas applicants are welcome.

PROJECT DETAILS
This is the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council’s £1.3 million, 3-year funded project ‘Energy for International Development’. The overall aim of this Project is to examine the feasibility and desirability of using solar energy to turn brackish water into clean water for irrigation in drought-prone areas of Northern India. Our research team, based in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, is particularly interested in the socio-economic implications of the sustainable innovations, such as grey-water recycling and solar panels, in improving poor people’s livelihoods.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The person appointed will be expected:
1. carry out a 3-year PhD research in the field of sustainable development. The chosen candidate is required to spend 6 to 9 months living in the rural villages in India to conduct fieldwork, such as observations and interviews.
2. contribute to some teaching of the undergraduate students and their assessment.
3. other duties as may be reasonably required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
The person appointed will have to meet the following essential requirements:
1. A good MA or MSc degree in the field of Sociology, Development Studies, Environment Studies, Geography, Anthropology, Economics or a relevant subject.
2. willing to travel to India and stay in rural villages to collect data over a period of time (the timing for the fieldwork is negotiable).
3. demonstrate interest in climate change and poverty alleviation and in making changes on the ground and influencing policy making process.
4. work independently and enjoy a cross-disciplinary team building environment.
5. possess analytical thinking and good writing and communication skills.
