The position will be suitable for a Ph.D. holder in Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent with research experience in the areas of Nonlinear Optimization and Integer Programming. Excellent skills in programming (C or C++) and experience with different operating systems are required.
The project aims to develop algorithms and an easy to use software tool for medium and large scale nonlinear optimization problems with continuous and integer variables. The main concern is to compute one as well as multiple global solutions where gradient based or derivative-free methods ought to be chosen depending on the characteristics of the functions involved in the problem to be solved. Problems with one or multiple objectives should also be solved by the required software tool.
The group comprises 9 PhD effective members from the University of Minho and other Portuguese universities working on Nonlinear Programming, Global Optimization, Multi-objective Optimization and Semi-infinite Programming. Besides the theoretical issues, the group has experience in using and developing optimization methods for solving a large variety of practical problems. There are also MSc and PhD research students involved in the ongoing projects. The group is part of the Systems Engineering Area, of the Algoritmi Research Centre, which has been ranked as excellent by the FCT international evaluation panel.
The group has been involved in Scientific Committees and organizing International Conferences on Optimization and Operations Research, such as Optimization 1995, Optimization 1998, Optimization 2001, Optimization 2004, Optimization 2007, ORP3 2007. The senior members of the group have been invited to paper review processes for International Journals. Some of the scientific activities of the group are incorporated in the Nonlinear Optimization Research Group at the University of Minho.
Collaborations:
LuÃs Nunes Vicente (Coimbra University, Portugal)
João Fernando (Coimbra University, Portugal)
