A position for a post-doctoral researcher is now available in the School of Computer Science and Informatics, University College Dublin, Ireland. The studentships are part of a project to research and develop a novel network level power management system for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSNs combine processing, sensing and communications into tiny battery powered devices or motes. It is expect that networks containing thousands of low-cost motes will be deployed over wide-areas to provide long-term monitoring of conditions and/or activity. Potential applications include traffic monitoring, precision agriculture, habitat monitoring, building security, waste control and seismic sensing. One of the key limitations of current WSNs is battery lifetime. The project will seek to reduce power consumption at the network-level. York has just won a five year EPSRC-funded Large Scale Complex IT Systems (LSCITS) initiative. LSCITS is a collaboration between Bristol, Leeds, Oxford, St Andrews and the University of York, and is intended to address fundamental problems in the development and assessment of modern, complex computer-based systems. York's part of the programme focuses on high integrity applications. There is a EPSRC PhD studentship available to start October 2007 or April 2008 to research in the area of: Context Independent Dependability Properties. The aim of the programme is to develop, if practical, a "contract language" and analysis method to evaluate the dependability properties of complex system configurations, given knowledge of the properties of the components. Postdoc - Surface Reactivity of Metal Sulfide and Oxide Minerals, Temple University, USA

A postdoctoral opening is available immediately in the group of Professor Daniel Strongin in the Department of Chemistry at Temple University. The initial appointment will be for one year, but longer appointments are possible. Specifically, the project involves the investigation of the surface reactivity of metal sulfide (e.g., pyrite) and oxide minerals (iron and manganese oxides) toward environmentally relevant molecules in conditions ranging from aqueous environments at room temperature to hydrothermal conditions (elevated temperature and pressure). The optimal candidate would have experience in infrared spectroscopy (i.e., attenuated total reflection), atomic force microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy (e.g., XPS).
